Sun describes this release of the Java Development Kit (JDK) as a bugfix release, but Java followers will spot many enhancements; most particularly, far better organized documentation. The HTML-organized files point you locally or to Sun's site for well-indexed links to answers for dozens of questions, and a summary of all the revisions to the JDK since the JDK 1.1 beta. Although there are no changes to the source API modules, there are new capabilities, such as signed applets, support for the compressed JAR file format, and inclusion of the JavaBeans component model. JDK 1.1 continues support for "deprecated" API compiler actions, for backwards compatibility with earlier JDKs.
